School of Veterinary Medicine

WELCOME TO SCHOOL OF VETERINARY MEDICINE (SVM)

The School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) is one of the academic institutions of the University of Juba, Juba, South Sudan established in 2018 to graduate highly qualified veterinary professionals.

The School comprises of three departments namely; Preclinical, Para-clinical and Clinical Studies, and it offers a programme leading to the Degree of Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (BVM).

Courses covered during the five years study period (Ten Semesters) include but not limited to; Biochemistry, Animal behavior and Management, Physiology, Gross Anatomy, Embryology, Histology, Biostatistics and Research Methodology, Animal Genetics and Breeding, Microbiology, Molecular biology, Animal Nutrition and Nutritional deficiencies, Immunology, Pharmacology, Pathology, Parasitology, Medicine and Therapeutics, Epidemiology, General Surgery and Anesthesiology, Infectious and Zoonotic Diseases, Toxicology and Forensic Medicine, Theriogenology, Livestock Economics and Pastoral Development, and Food Hygiene and Safety.

Total Credit Hours (CHs) of the courses are 209 CHs.

Vision

‘‘To be a leader in transforming the lives of communities of this country whose mainstay is largely livestock through training in veterinary medicine and sustainable management, innovative and rigorous approach to Natural Resources Management.”

‘‘To train students to become skilled veterinarians with competencies to be able to answer the needs of pastoralists in disease diagnoses, prevention and control and to provide knowledge and technological skills needed to enhance innovation for better livelihoods of South Sudanese.”

Objective of the School

“To advance and promote knowledge, skills, self-reliance and sound knowledge-based policies for food production and sustainability, as well as to conserve, manage the biodiversity, natural resources and environment.”

Delivery Method

Teaching and learning methodology delivered as follows:

Theory: including, Lectures, group discussions, assignments, seminars, report writing, guided practice, case analysis and term paper presentation.

Practical: including demonstration, observation, self-practice, field visits, and tutorials.
